Vivarium Standard Operating Procedures

Accrediting and funding agencies require EHS to review all agents used in animal experiments to identify potential occupational hazards, prescribe appropriate waste disposal methods and post relevant Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in the CU Anschutz Vivarium. Use the appropriate form by following the special instructions for download and submission outlined below.

Note: Individuals experimenting on animal subjects must contact the vivarium facility manager before first use of an approved SOP to review any additional requirements.

Follow browser-specific steps to download the SOP form and complete it

On Chrome: 

  1. Upper-right corner of browser; click the download icon (downward-pointing box-arrow)
  2. Open your laptop's downloads folder and locate the file "animal-biosafety-vivarium-sop.pdf"
  3. Right click on the file and select "Open with > Adobe Acrobat"
  4. Complete the form

On Firefox:

  1. Select the download icon (folder with arrow icon pointing downwards)
  2. Select option Open with Adobe Acrobat
  3. Open the file "animal-biosafety-vivarium-sop.pdf," and complete it

On Edge:

  1. Click the save icon
  2. Ensure save as type has "Adobe Acrobat Document" type selected
  3. Open the file "animal-biosafety-vivarium-sop.pdf," and complete it

On Mac:

  1. Click on the download button
  2. On the Please wait... screen, hover the cursor over the bottom of the screen to reveal the options and click the download button (arrow pointing down).
  3. Form will download to the Downloads folder
  4. Open the file "animal-biosafety-vivarium-sop.pdf," and edit with Adobe Acrobat

This review determines whether a particular agent requires an SOP based on the hazard category, agent credentials and method of administration.

HAZARD CATEGORIESAGENT ID REQUIRED
  • Hazardous
  • Environmental (ecological) hazard
  • Pharmaceutical with acute toxicity
  • Pharmaceutical without acute toxicity
  • Non-hazardous (includes antibodies)

The Cayuse Experimental Agent database will list the Hazard Category of the agent. If an agent is not listed, send the agent's name, CAS# and safety datasheet to [email protected] to have the agent added to the database.
