Vivarium Standard Operating Procedures
Accrediting and funding agencies require EHS to review all agents used in animal experiments to identify potential occupational hazards, and prescribe appropriate waste disposal methods. Based on the review, EHS will request, review and approve SOPs required to be posted in the CU Anschutz Vivarium. Upon approval of a Vivarium SOP, the Vivarium Facility Manager must be contacted and any additional OLAR requirements must be met, prior to first use.
Two Vivarium SOP templates are available:
- Hazardous Chemical-Drug Vivarium SOP
- For the administration of chemical and pharmaceutical agents to animals
- Animal Biosafety Vivarium SOP
- For the administration of biological agents (infectious agents, viral vectors, cell lines, etc) to animals
Animal Biosafety Vivarium SOP form
(ABSL)
For the administration of biological agents (infectious agents, viral vectors, cell lines, etc) to animalsThe form developed by EHS for this review includes a means to determine whether a particular agent requires an SOP, based on its Hazard Category (listed below), and method of administration.
- Hazardous
- Environmental (ecological) hazard
- Pharmaceutical with acute toxicity
- Pharmaceutical without acute toxicity
- Non-hazardous (includes antibodies)
The Cayuse Experimental Agent database will list the Hazard Category of the agent. If the agent is not listed in the database, send the name, CAS# and safety datasheet of the agent to [email protected] to have the agent added to the database and hazard category determined.

- Right click on the file and select "Open with > Adobe Acrobat"

- Open the file

- Click the save icon
- Ensure save as type has "Adobe Acrobat Document" type selected
- Open the file

- On the Please wait... screen, hover the cursor over the bottom of the screen to reveal the options and click the download button (arrow pointing down).
- Form will be downloaded to the Downloads folder
- Open and edit form with Adobe Acrobat software

Attach completed form to Cayuse IACUC Protocol for final review and approval
