The University encourages and supports outside interactions of its faculty and student employees with federal, state, and local governments as well as the private sector. Because outside interactions carry with them an increased potential for conflict of interest and/or commitment, either actual or perceived, the University employs procedures for identifying potential conflicts through annual disclosure, with a rigorous and consistent review of such disclosures.
Research, scholarship, employment, travel, and other activities may be subject to export control laws. Export control laws are promulgated by the United States government and are administered by various Federal agencies including the Department of Commerce, the Department of State, and the Department of Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control. The Export Controls Office is available to help faculty and staff navigate through these complex rules and regulations to ensure compliance with export control requirements.
A law, popularly known as "HIPAA" (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996), requires that the University establish policies and procedures to ensure the confidentiality and the security of protected health information. This office helps review protocols using protected information in order to prevent breaches, as well as handles compliance issues arising when breaches occur.
Integrity is at the center of all research, in order for the scientific “record” to be trustworthy, and in order for those practicing and producing science to feel valued at the workplace and in society. Besides handling allegations of misconduct, information and training toward greater awareness of ethical situations and Responsible Conduct of Research are provided.
The Clinical Research Support Center conducts random quality assurance reviews of research involving human subjects conducted at the Anschutz Medical Campus, the Downtown Campus, and at some affiliate institutions. These quality assurance reviews are intended to be an informative and educational experience, providing the participants with practical guidance and tools for conducting their project. In addition, study teams may request a visit from the QA team.
