Exposures Guidance

Call 9-1-1 or go to the closest urgent care facility or hospital emergency department.

Refer to the Biological Spills/Exposures webpage for guidance on spills and exposures involving hazardous biological materials, such as human blood and other human-derived materials, cultures of infectious agents or genetically modified materials. An overview of the guidance is below.

If you are exposed to bloodborne pathogens or potentially infectious material:

Rinse the area in a sink, safety shower, or emergency eyewash for at least 15 minutes

If a biological or chemical agent contacts your eye or skin:

Rinse the affected area in a sink, safety shower, or emergency eyewash for at least 15 minutes

Wash injured skin

For needlestick or injury to the skin, wash with soap and warm water.

If you are exposed to radioactive materials:

Remove clothing

Carefully remove contaminated clothing and place into a sealed bag.

Immediately rinse the area in a sink, safety shower, or emergency eyewash for at least 15 minutes
