Exposures Guidance
Call 9-1-1 or go to the closest urgent care facility or hospital emergency department.
Refer to the Biological Spills/Exposures webpage for guidance on spills and exposures involving hazardous biological materials, such as human blood and other human-derived materials, cultures of infectious agents or genetically modified materials. An overview of the guidance is below.
If you are exposed to bloodborne pathogens or potentially infectious material:

Call for consultation or get help
During normal business hours, call Occupational Health (303) 724-9145 for consultation. Then follow up with a Designated Medical Provider or go to the UCHealth Emergency Department. Outside of normal business hours, go to the UCHealth Emergency Department.

Report the incident
Fill out the Incident Report Form for Biological Hazards, and submit the completed form to biosafety.program@ucdenver.edu. Report within 24 hours any incidents involving biological hazards such as recombinant DNA, microorganisms, human-derived materials, or other potentially infectious materials.

If a biological or chemical agent contacts your eye or skin:

Rinse the affected area in a sink, safety shower, or emergency eyewash for at least 15 minutes

Wash injured skin
For needlestick or injury to the skin, wash with soap and warm water.

Call for consultation or get help

Follow up with a healthcare professional
Seek treatment from a Designated Medical Provider. Provide a copy of the involved chemical's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) to the healthcare provider.

If you are exposed to radioactive materials:

Remove clothing
Carefully remove contaminated clothing and place into a sealed bag.

Immediately rinse the area in a sink, safety shower, or emergency eyewash for at least 15 minutes

Call EHS
Contact EHS at (303) 724-0345, do not leave the area until EHS has assessed the situation.

Seek treatment in nearest Emergency Department
