NIH Revises Data Management & Sharing Plan Requirements
Pre-Award
Mar 15, 2026NOT-OD-26-046
NIH has introduced a streamlined and simplified format for Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plans, effective for applications due on or after May 25, 2026. This update refines how applicants document data‑sharing practices, reducing burden and clarifying expectations based on insights from more than 1,100 plans reviewed since the 2023 policy release. The underlying NIH DMS Policy (NOT‑OD‑21‑013) remains unchanged: all NIH‑funded research that generates scientific data must still include a DMS Plan as part of the application and adhere to it as a term of award. The 2026 notice updates only the format and required elements, not the policy itself.
The CU Anschutz Office of Grants and Contracts will be discussing this update as well as many of the recent NIH policy updates during a virtual information session on March 26th from 10:00 am (MNT) - 11:00 am. Contact Garrett Steed if you are interested in attending.
