Secondary IDs and Collaborators
Identifying Sources of Funding on ClinicalTrials.gov
May 26, 2022Secondary IDs are identifiers (other than the organization's protocol ID or the NCT number) assigned to the study, such as grant or contract numbers.
All funding or supporting organizations other than the Sponsor should be listed as Collaborators. The system may prompt you to add the appropriate organization as a collaborator if you enter grant number in the Secondary ID field.
NOTE: If your NIH grant is very new, it may not be in the system yet, and you won't be able to enter it. If you have double-checked your grant number and still receive an error message stating that the grant number is not recognized, enter the granting institute under "Collaborators", and leave the "Secondary ID" field blank. Just be sure to enter the grant number the next time you update the record.

If the clinical study is funded in whole or in part by a U.S. Federal Government agency (such as NIH), the grant or contract number must be entered as a Secondary ID.
- Enter the grant or contract number in the “Secondary ID” field under the "Study Identification" module.
- For NIH grants, include the activity code, institute code, and 6-digit serial number, as shown in the table below for a sample grant number.
