Radiation Safety Training

The Radiation Safety Training Manual is available as a study guide to prepare for Radiation Safety Initial Training, Rad Worker Training - Part II, and PI RAM Module.

Worker and PI Training Information

Overview

Two-part training is required to obtain Radiation Worker certification:

  • CU: Radiation Safety Initial Training (Part I), in Skillsoft
  • Radiation Worker Training - Part II, in person

It is highly recommended to complete this two-part sequentially.

To maintain Radiation Worker certification, the Radiation Safety Refresher training must be completed annually in Skillsoft.

X-Ray Training

The CU Medical Anschutz Campus houses various x-ray devices such as the DEXA, the pQCT, and the fluoroscopy x-ray.

If you need training for dosimetry, only x-ray training is required.

To arrange training on any x-ray device, email radtraining@ucdenver.edu

Radiation Worker Training

CU: Radiation Safety Initial Training (Part I)

The course covers basic radiation physics, instrumentation, biological effects of ionizing radiation, radiation protection principles and radioactive waste, among other topics.

Radiation Worker Training - Part II

This is an instructor-led training, offered monthly, reviewing topics from the initial training, plus use and selection of instrumentation, radioactivity calculations, and decay concept. An overview of RAM use in the lab setting is discussed, as well as recommendations for record-keeping.

Currently offered sessions:

4/18/2023, Tuesday, 9:00AM-12:00PM, In-Person at the Nighthorse Campbell Native Health building Room 202

5/09/2023, Tuesday, 9:00AM-12:00PM, In-Person at the Anschutz Health Sciences Building (AHSB) Room 2002

5/30/2023, Tuesday, 9:00AM-12:00PM, In-Person at the Nighthorse Campbell Native Health building Room 202

6/20/2023, Tuesday, 9:00AM-12:00PM, In-Person at the Nighthorse Campbell Native Health building Room 202

  • No walk-ins allowed.
  • if your registration confirmation email states you are "Wait Listed", the session may already be at capacity. You will be contacted if a space opens.

To prepare for Radiation Worker Training - Part II:

  • Attendees must bring a scientific calculator to the class (your phone is acceptable)
  • The attendee must reserve enough time in their schedule to complete the exam (most people finish the exam in 45 minutes - 1 hour)

RAM PI Module

PIs seeking authorization to use radioactive material must complete this training, included in the latter part of the instructor-led Radiation Worker Training - Part II.

Radiation Safety Refresher Training

This Skillsoft course covers radiation safety principles, and serves as a reminder on best practices and radiation safety processes and procedures.

    Other Radiation Safety Training Courses

Contact EHS to arrange training in the following:

    • DEXA, pQCT
    • Fluoroscopy x-ray
    • MultiRAD350 X-irradiator
    • X-Ray Safety Training (Skillsoft coming soon)

    Radiation Worker Training

Initial two-part training, as well as annual refresher training, are required to achieve and maintain Radiation Worker certification. It is recommended, but not required, to take the initial two-part training sequentially. Part I and the refresher are accessed on Skillsoft.
