2022 Steven Fadul Award 

The Steven Fadul Award is an annual prize of $1,500, awarded to an outstanding PRA or other member of the School's technical research staff.

Nominations for the 2022 Steven Fadul Award are being accepted now through November 16, 2022.

Biomedical research increasingly relies on teamwork among students, postdocs, faculty, and PRAs and other members of our technical staff. Of these, it is the technical staff who, over a period of years, log the most time in the lab and acquire unique knowledge, insight, and wisdom. They become the foundation for an efficient, productive, and collegial research atmosphere. Their ​contributions, however, are not recognized to the extent that they deserve. We seek to reward them, and in doing so to honor Steve Fadul's memory and strengthen the research enterprise at the School of Medicine.

Doris Duke Call for Applications 

We are now recruiting Scholars for the University of Colorado School of Medicine Fund to Retain Clinical Scientists (CU-FRCS).
 
GRANT DESCRIPTION:

• A grant and mentoring program for MD or DO’s of all genders who are funded junior faculty facing hardship resulting from caregiving needs.
• Annual 1-year award of $40,000.
• One year of funding is guaranteed, a 2nd can be requested, subject to committee review.
• Money can be used to pay for research costs including PRA salary (not PI salary) or other research and training costs.

• CU-FRCS Scholars must have a MD or DO degree and active medical license.
• Must have full-time CU-SOM faculty appointment (Instructor, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor no more than one year in rank).
• Must be PI on a research grant(s) (internal or external CDA e.g. KO1/K23/K12/K23, or research project grant).
• Evidence of strong research training and productivity as well as primary mentor(s) with extensive research experience.
• Strong evidence of commitment to pursuing a career as a clinician-scientist.
• Money can be used to support only clinical research that does not include research using animals or primary tissues derived from animals.
• Demonstrate a compelling need that is related to family caregiving demands (e.g. children/elders/self).

ACS-IRG Seed Grant Funding – 2023 

Each award is for 1 year in the amount of $70,000. Application Due Date: Friday, December 2nd, 2022.  

The purpose of this grant program is to support the development of exceptional research projects that will help lead to the conquest of cancer and will further the objectives of the CU Cancer Center. Studies in all areas of cancer research - laboratory, clinical, prevention and control, and psychosocial cancer research - will be considered for funding.

ACS IRG Grants aim to entice young faculty to pursue cancer-related research problems and are reserved for applicants who are in their first few years as junior faculty members (instructors and assistant professors) and who are in the process of establishing independent cancer research programs.

New NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy

Beginning in January 2023, the Final NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing (NOT-OD-21-013) will require researchers to include a data management and sharing plan (DMSP) in all funding applications. 

The Chief Research Informatics Officer (CRIO) Council has convened a working group to determine campus needs and response to the new policy. We are creating CU Anschutz-specific data management and sharing plan (DMSP) templates and concierge services to help researchers. More information can be found on the Research Informatics Office website.

Please email crio@cuanschutz.edu with questions or if you would like to join the Working Group and help define campus data management and sharing infrastructure and policies.

Key features of the new policy are:

• The policy applies to all research, funded in whole or in part by NIH, that results in the generation of scientific data including grants, contracts, and other transactions; it does not apply to research and other activities that do not generate scientific data, including training, infrastructure development, and non-research activities. 
• The DMSP is two pages and is not a scored component of proposals.
• Annual Notice of Award is dependent on RPPR reporting and grant budgets may include costs for preserving and sharing data, including personnel and storage costs. These funds must be spent during the funding period.
• Scientific data should be made accessible as soon as possible, and no later than the time of an associated publication, or the end of performance period, whichever comes first.
• NIH will provide a template later this fall. A draft is here and includes the following categories for inclusion:
  • Element 1: Data type (type, amount, which data will be preserved/shared, metadata and documentation)
  • Element 2: Tools, software, and code
  • Element 3: Data standards
  • Element 4: Data Preservation, access, timelines for sharing and preservation, and repository selection
  • Element 5: Factors affecting access, distribution, or reuse of scientific data, controlled access and privacy considerations
  • Element 6: Institutional compliance, monitoring, and roles

CU Anschutz SOM Programmatic Incubator for Research (CU ASPIRE) announces the second round of funding available for 2023

The School of Medicine and Office of Vice Chancellor sponsored RFA aims to foster the development of interdisciplinary, programmatic research on across campus.

The CU ASPIRE Program is designed to facilitate collaborations on unmet needs in basic science or clinical medicine, and to increase submission and success of program project, center grants, and large multi-investigator programs on campus.

Fundamentals of Statistical Literacy I Course Offering

This course gives an introduction to statistical thinking and communication involving basic statistical models and tests and is appropriate for those familiar with biomedical research but little or no statistical expertise. Fall 2022, the course is offered November thru December from 6-8pm.

The Lorna Grindlay Moore, PhD Faculty Launch Fund

The CU Denver and CU Anschutz Medical Campus proudly announce the next call for applications for the Lorna Grindlay Moore, PhD, Faculty Launch Award.

Eligible Instructors and Assistant Professors are invited to apply for a one-year award of $40,000 to help launch their independent research programs. Faculty may be appointed in any of the schools or colleges of the CU Denver or CU Anschutz campuses whose research is centered on women’s health during and after the reproductive period.

Appropriate areas include, but are not limited to pregnancy, family planning, infertility, oncology, education, public policy, mental health, cardiovascular health, diabetes, advancing the academic careers of women faculty and the effect of COVID-19 on women’s health.
