Bioenergetic Effects of Aging and Menopause (BEAM)

Bioenergetic Effects of Aging and Menopause (BEAM)

The goal of the BEAM (Bioenergetic Effects of Aging and Menopause) study is to look at how the loss of estrogen and/or the increase in FSH changes cortisol levels, fat gain, and risk of disease in women as they age. At the time of menopause there are changes to stress hormone levels, body composition and metabolism that lead to an increase in the risk of chronic disease. Why this happens is not known, but it is thought to be related to the loss of estrogen and/or the increase in FSH. Postmenopausal women (age range 45-65 years old) who have not had a menstrual cycle in the previous 6 months are eligible for this study. During this study, women who qualify will receive two injections of either a study drug (Degarelix) that suppresses female sex hormone levels or two injections of a placebo (no drug). During the 6 months of drug treatment participants will also be asked to wear a patch on their skin. This patch will contain either estrogen or placebo (no drug).
