Dear Research Colleagues,

In October, Chancellor Don Elliman announced that university operations at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus will be officially closed from the end of business on Friday, December 23, 2022 through Monday, January 2, 2023 in gratitude for our team’s hard work and dedication. Normal business hours will resume on Tuesday, January 3. 

UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital and Children’s Hospital Colorado operations are not affected by this closure. Students, faculty and staff assigned to work in the clinics/hospitals on campus must report to work unless told otherwise.

Please note that those with clinical responsibilities and other critical functions requiring them to work during the closure will receive equivalent holiday administrative leave to take at another point during the fiscal year. This should be coordinated with your supervisor. 

In addition, the University Research Team has put plans in place to ensure that critical operations can continue without interruption during the closure. Please see below for department-specific details and emergency contact information. 

Laboratory Research

• For a laboratory emergency (water leak, fire, abnormal smell/odor, etc.), contact CU Anschutz Campus Police at 4-4444 or 911 from a campus phone (or 303-724-4444 from a mobile phone).  University Police Dispatch will notify appropriate campus resources to respond to the situation.

Clinical/Community Research

• If you have an emergency or urgent request during the closure, please contact: John Heldens, Director, or Cat Sutherland, Assistant Director. COMIRB will also monitor COMIRB@ucdenver.edu for urgent requests. 

Environmental Health & Safety

• EHS will be on-call but not on campus during the closure. During this time, EHS will not be providing routine services such as hazardous waste pick-up, radiation package deliveries, irradiator escorting, etc. To that end, please plan ahead for your EHS needs. The last biomedical waste (“red tub”) pick-ups will be on Thursday, Dec 22.
• In the event of a lab related emergency, call University Police at 4-4444 or 911 from a campus phone (or 303-724-4444 from a mobile phone) and Police Dispatch will page EHS.

Office of Laboratory Animal Research (OLAR)

• OLAR staff will be on-site daily to ensure all animals are well cared for during the holiday closure. Below are the OLAR holiday schedules to allow research staff to plan ahead:  
• Dec 26, 2022: OLAR will only have holiday staffing levels and offices will be officially closed. If you have an emergency and need assistance, call the ON-CALL Veterinarian (numbers are posted in the facility).
• Dec. 23, 2022 – Jan. 2, 2023 (with the exception of Dec. 26): OLAR will be lightly staffed with limited administrative support available. If you need assistance during business hours, please call the facility front desk at RC1 (303-724-3011), R2/AHSB (303-724-3644) or the main OLAR Office (303-724-2322) to be connected to someone that can assist. If you have an emergency, please call the ON-CALL Veterinarian (numbers posted in the facility).

Special Announcements

New NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy 

The CRIO Council Data Management and Sharing Plan Working Group hosted a virtual Town Hall on December 13 where information and resources about the New NIH Data  Management and Sharing Policy (DMSP) were shared and discussed with more than 200 participants.   

Beginning January 25, 2023, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will require researchers nationwide to include a Data Management and Sharing Policy (DMSP) in all research funding applications.   

The suggested DMSP length is two pages and is not a scored component of proposals. NIH has provided a DMS-Plan-blank-format-page, which includes documentation relating to data types, tools and software, standards, timelines for sharing, and privacy and compliance considerations. Scientific data should be made accessible as soon as possible, and no later than the time of an associated publication or the end of performance period. 

The detailed policy changes can be found online, and key features are described on the NIH DMSP website. The policy applies to all NIH-funded research and the annual Notice of Award is dependent on Research Performance Progress Reports. Grant budgets may include costs for preserving and sharing data including for personnel, but these funds must be spent during the funding period. 

The DMSP Working Group is developing templates for each plan component, including information about where you can store and share data on campus, as well as cost, security, and compliance information. If you missed the Town Hall, the recording can be found here.

The Lorna Grindlay Moore, PhD Faculty Launch Fund 

The CU Denver and CU Anschutz Medical Campus proudly announce the next call for applications for the Lorna Grindlay Moore, PhD, Faculty Launch Award. 

Eligible Instructors and Assistant Professors are invited to apply for a one-year award of $40,000 to help launch their independent research programs. Faculty may be appointed in any of the schools or colleges of the CU Denver or CU Anschutz campuses whose research is centered on women’s health during and after the reproductive period. Appropriate areas include, but are not limited to pregnancy, family planning, infertility, oncology, education, public policy, mental health, cardiovascular health, diabetes, advancing the academic careers of women faculty and the effect of COVID-19 on women’s health.

CU ASPIRE Program Announces Second Round of Funding Available 2023

High Resolution peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (HR-pQCT) 2023 Seed Grant Call for Applications

High-Resolution peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (HR-pQCT) is now available in the outpatient Adult CTRC to obtain non-invasive 3D images at the distal tibia and distal radius of humans for clinical in vivo assessments of volumetric bone mineral density and parameters of bone quality (e.g., microarchitecture, geometry, porosity, and biomechanics). XtremeCT II HR-pQCT scanner images have a very small isotropic voxel size (60.7 μm) and very low radiation dose (≤5 μSv per scan/anatomical site) so the device can be used for studies performed in adult, adolescent, and pediatric populations.

These seed grants are intended to increase utilization of this new instrument and can only be used for HR-pQCT scanning/analysis. They are supported by the CCTSI, the Vice Chancellor of Research, and Pediatric Endocrinology at Children’s Hospital Colorado.
