NIH Funding Announcements

NIH funding opportunities and notices are presented weekly. Please see the current and past updates below.

Limited Funding Opportunities

Currently we are seeing an increase in the number of limited institutional grant opportunities in which we can nominate a single applicant from our institution. Due to the short turn-around time we will have a modified and shortened process for these types of grant opportunities.

For the limited institutional grant opportunities below, please submit a brief summary (one page or less) and biosketch by the date indicated.

Pew Biomedical Scholars

Program Summary
Based on their performance during their education and training, candidates should demonstrate outstanding promise as contributors in science relevant to human health. This program does not fund clinical trials research. Strong proposals will incorporate particularly creative and pioneering approaches to basic, translational, and applied biomedical research. Candidates whose work is based on biomedical principles but who bring in concepts and theories from more diverse fields are encouraged to apply.

During the four-year grant term, program participants are required to attend an annual meeting held in March. All eligible expenses for attendees’ travel, lodging, and meals are paid by Pew. The meeting provides Pew scholars with an opportunity to present their research and for scientific collaboration and exchange with other scholars and members of the National Advisory Committee.

Internal Application Requirements (all in 1 PDF format)

  • Self-Assessment: Please include your most significant research (1400 characters max), innovation approach (1400 characters max), and benefit from scholarship (1400 characters max).
  • Abstract of Proposed Research (2,500 characters max)
  • PI CV / Biosketch
  • Budget Overview (up to 1 page): A basic budget outlining project costs is sufficient; detailed OCG budgets are not required.

Eligibility

  • Candidates must hold a doctorate in biomedical sciences, medicine, or a related field.
  • As of September 1, 2021, hold a full-time appointment at the rank of assistant professor. (Appointments such as research assistant professor, adjunct assistant professor, assistant professor research track, visiting professor, or instructor are not eligible).
  • Candidates must not have been appointed as an assistant professor at any institution prior to June 14, 2017, whether or not such an appointment was on a tenure track. Time spent in clinical internships, residencies, in work toward board certification, or on parental leave does not count as part of this four-year limit. Candidates who took parental leave should contact Pew’s program office to ensure that application reviewers are aware of their circumstances.
  • Candidates may apply to the program a maximum of two times. All applicants must be nominated by their institution and must complete the 2022 online application.

Award Information

$300,000 ($75,000 per year for a four-year period). Not more than $12,500 of the annual award may be used for the scholar's salary (including benefits) or $50,000 over the duration of the grant. There are no limits on student or postdoctoral salaries. Not more than 8 percent of the total award ($24,000) may be allocated for overhead/F&A costs. It is expected that Pew scholars will spend at least 80 percent of their time in work related to the accomplishment of their overall research goals.

Deadlines

  • Materials due to Internal Review Committee: Update - extended to April 9, 2021
  • Sponsor Nomination Deadline: May 17, 2021
  • Sponsor Application Deadline: September 1, 2021

Interested candidates must send a one-page summary of their research proposal and their biosketch in pdf format to limited.submissions@cuanschutz.edu by April 9, 2021

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has released information for their Fiscal Year 2022 NEA Research Labs Program

An organization may submit more than one application. In each case, the request must be for a distinctly different project. However, an organization will not receive more than one new NEA Research Labs award. If more than one research team within an organization is interested in applying, NEA is encouraging the teams to explore working together to submit one application on behalf of the organization rather than separate applications.

Note that this grant program requires a 1:1 match.

  • Materials due to Internal Review Committee: March 2, 2021
  • Full Applications deadline: March 29, 2021

Interested candidates must send a one-page summary of their research proposal and their biosketch in pdf format to limited.submissions@cuanschutz.edu by March 2, 2021.

National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) within the National Institutes of Health has released a Request for Applications (RFA) titled “Screening for Conditions by Electronic Nose Technology (SCENT)” (U01 Clinical Trial Optional)

The CCTSI Clinical Faculty Scholars Program is looking for 5-6 new scholars for the 2021-2023 cohort

The program is a two-year intensive mentored junior faculty development program designed to develop research-oriented faculty into independent investigators in patient-oriented clinical translational outcomes research.

The CFSP enrolls 4-6 junior faculty members per year from clinical departments. Faculty from affiliated institutions (i.e. Denver VA, Denver Health, National Jewish, Kaiser Permanente,) also are eligible.

Physicians, other clinicians, and doctorally-trained researchers in disciplines relevant to clinical-translational research may apply. Specialists and generalist clinicians are welcome.

CFSP Application Criteria:

  1. Must be a current or prospective member of regular/affiliated faculty at the University of Colorado.
  2. Must be a physician (MD or DO), DDS, DMD, PharmD or doctorally-trained non-physician (PhD or equivalent).
  3. Must have completed rigorous research training during fellowship (physicians) or doctoral program (PhD etc.). An advanced degree (masters or doctorate) or substantial prior training in epidemiology, biostatistics, and research design is preferred for clinician applicants.
  4. Must not have any current or prior funding as a principal investigator at the R01 level or equivalent. Individuals with a current career development award (K-award or equivalent) are eligible.
  5. Must demonstrate a commitment to a career as a clinical-translational researcher, signified by evidence of prior accomplishments (training, publications, small grants received).  A clear research plan to obtain a career development grant or independent funding at the R01 level (for applicants with an existing career development award) is essential.
  6. Must have the support of the applicant’s home department/division; at least 50% protected time for research during the 2 years of enrollment in the CFSP with salary support for that protected time; and an agreement to fund the program costs. Total program costs paid by the sponsor are $22,000 per participant per year for two years (July 2021 to June 2023).
  7. Must be willing to plan around Tuesday work in progress and Special Topics training sessions (7:30am-9am weekly; 9-11am 4th Tuesday of the month August to June).
  8. Should have mentorship needs that are not fully addressed within the faculty member’s home department or division, or new to campus and in need of establishing a new local mentorship team.

To apply, please go to the CFSP webpage. For questions regarding CFSP contact Kathleen Spindle or the Program Director: Anne Libby, PhD.
