Hispanic-Serving Institution/Minority-Serving Institution Grant Eligibility Details

October 26, 2021 Update

The CU Denver and CU Anschutz joint designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) provides opportunities to better support our students, improve student retention and growth, increase research opportunities, and build institutional capabilities -- all in service of our Hispanic and Latinx students. Much of this work will be achieved through competitive grant opportunities. Please read the update for details regarding HSI grant eligibility.

  1. CU Denver and CU Anschutz PIs are eligible to apply for any federal funding opportunity available to HSIs and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), a blanket term that includes HSIs. This includes funding specified for Title III and Title V institutions as defined by the federal Higher Education Act (HEA) and any funding opportunity that is specific to HSIs. Different federal agencies have different requirements for how we certify our eligibility. As faculty prepare proposals, the Office of Grants and Contracts will provide this certification.
  2. As part of implementing our respective campus strategic plans, we are working to create tactics to support grant writing for larger proposals. Ahead of this, we want to make you aware of the kind of opportunities that will arise. We will work to keep you informed about new opportunities, but you should also be on the lookout for them yourselves.
  3. This status will afford research faculty other opportunities as well. For example, many large research proposals, e.g., centers and other initiatives, require a team of universities and require that some team member(s) be from an MSI. You can emphasize to colleagues at other universities that CU Denver|Anschutz is now an HSI; this will likely make you an even more attractive partner on big proposals.
  4. For educational, recruiting, and pipeline development proposals, partnering with local HSI community colleges can often be beneficial in strengthening a proposal’s impact. Both Community College of Denver and Metropolitan State University are HSIs and can serve as compelling partners in future program planning that takes advantage of having three HSIs on the Auraria campus.
  5. Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI)-specific opportunities that restrict eligibility are a little more nuanced and verifying our eligibility varies from agency to agency. Please contact your research administrator if you need assistance in verifying eligibility.

If you have questions about your eligibility for any opportunity (federal or non-federal), please contact the appropriate research administrator in your unit or Stefan Reiss in the Office of Research Services for information/clarification.
