A MESSAGE FROM THE VICE CHANCELLOR FOR RESEARCH

Vice Chancellor for Research

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, I have the privilege of getting a front row seat to all the incredible biomedical research taking place across our campus. In this year’s Research Annual Report, I’m proud to share a few of our team’s biggest recent accomplishments and findings.

Over the past year, our researchers have broken new ground and advanced scientific progress in monumental ways. From basic science to population level research and everything in-between, CU Anschutz is rapidly advancing new discoveries from the laboratory to the clinic to the world at large.

I hope you enjoy reading more about our team’s scientific contributions and how researchers at CU Anschutz are making a dramatic impact on human health and well-being worldwide.

A THRIVING RESEARCH ENTERPRISE: KEY DISCOVERIES IN 2023-24

Brain Health Breakthroughs

Scientists at CU Anschutz are pioneering innovative research to unlock the mysteries of the human brain. Not only are interdisciplinary teams studying the underlying causes of mental and cognitive disorders, but researchers are also advancing new treatments for anxiety, depression, Alzheimer’s disease and much more.

Delivering New Cures Through Cellular Therapy

Home to some of the world's leading cellular therapy scientists, CU Anschutz is on the cutting edge of transformative regenerative medicine research. With a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that can rapidly translate laboratory findings into personalized therapies, our researchers are revolutionizing treatments for diseases like cancer and sickle cell disease.

Uncovering the Science Behind Obesity

Nearly 40% of Americans are considered obese, making the research related to diet, exercise and weight management more important than ever. Scientists at CU Anschutz are leading the way with studies that are helping doctors to understand the key drivers of obesity and the most effective interventions to help patients to live healthier lives.

Advancements in Autoimmune Disease

Autoimmune disease research can be highly complex. Because these conditions typically involve multiple body systems, effective research requires close collaboration across scientific disciplines. By working together and sharing expertise, CU Anschutz researchers are making progress toward identifying the root causes – and potential cures – for a wide range of autoimmune diseases.

Transforming Diabetes Care

CU Anschutz is nationally recognized for its novel research into diabetes detection, prevention and care. In addition to studying the immunology, genetics and mechanisms that drive diabetes, our physician-scientists use an integrated approach to incorporate new treatments and interventions directly into patient care.

AB NEXUS: AN INTERCAMPUS RESEARCH SUCCESS STORY

The AB Nexus program was established in 2020 to encourage and expand multidisciplinary research collaborations between the University of Colorado Anschutz and Boulder campuses. Within three years, the program has catalyzed a new culture of intercampus research, while advancing novel investigations to improve human health. Learn more about some of the interdisciplinary teams that are leveraging the support of AB Nexus to take their research to the next level.
