Exposure Guidance


Emergent situations 

  • Call 911 or go to the closest urgent care facility or hospital emergency department.   

Exposures involving bloodborne pathogens or infectious materials (e.g. recombinant DNA, microorganisms, human-derived materials, or other potentially infectious materials)

  • Rinse the area in a sink, safety shower, or emergency eyewash for at least 15 minutes.
  • Within four working days, file a claim​ with University Risk Management. 

Exposures involving exposure to a chemical 

  • Rinse the area in a sink, safety shower, or emergency eyewash for at least 15 minutes.
  • Within four working days, file a claim​ with University Risk Management.

Exposures involving radioactive materials

  • Carefully remove contaminated clothing and place into a sealed bag.
  • Immediately rinse the area in a sink, safety shower, or emergency eyewash for at least 15 minutes.
  • Contact EHS (303) 724-0345, do not leave the area until EHS has assessed the situation.
  • Within four working days, file a claim​ with University Risk Management.
